Great Lakes Marina Guide
A comprehensive guide to marinas across Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio — covering amenities, nearby accommodations, supply stores, and cruising tips for the world’s largest freshwater boating region.
Cruising the Great Lakes by Boat
The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth, containing 21% of the world’s surface fresh water. Spanning over 94,000 square miles across eight US states and two Canadian provinces, they offer a boating experience that rivals any coastal cruising ground in North America — with the significant advantages of freshwater operation, no tides, and dramatically lower corrosion.
This guide covers 24 marinas across 6 states, selected for their quality of facilities, transient-friendliness, and relevance to recreational cruisers. For each marina, we provide key details including slip counts, amenities, nearby hotels, and marine supply stores. The guide is organized by state, starting with Michigan (the Great Lakes boating capital) and moving west and south.
The cruising season runs from May through October, with peak conditions in June through August. Lake Superior has the shortest season due to cold water and persistent spring fog. Most marinas operate seasonally with haul-outs beginning in mid-October. The Great Lakes are also a key segment of America’s Great Loop, with Chicago serving as the critical junction between the lakes and the inland river system.
Great Loop tip: The lowest unavoidable fixed bridge on the Great Loop is near Lemont, IL, with approximately 19’7" clearance. This sets the maximum air draft for any vessel transiting between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system. Plan your route using the AGLCA resources.
Michigan
MI · 3,288 mi shorelineMichigan has the longest freshwater coastline in the United States and borders four of the five Great Lakes — Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie. From the sophisticated resort marinas of Little Traverse Bay to the legendary Straits of Mackinac, Michigan is the undisputed heart of Great Lakes boating. The state’s two peninsulas offer remarkably diverse cruising, from the warm-water harbors of the Lower Peninsula’s west coast to the rugged, remote shores of the Upper Peninsula on Lake Superior.

Great Lakes Cruising Tips
Weather & Conditions
Great Lakes weather is notoriously changeable. Summer thunderstorms can develop rapidly, bringing gale-force winds, lightning, and waterspouts in what seems like minutes. Seiches — standing waves that can raise water levels 10+ feet — are a unique Great Lakes hazard, especially on shallow Lake Erie. Fog is common in late spring and fall when warm air meets cold lake surfaces. Monitor NOAA Weather Radio continuously and check marine forecasts before each passage. The NWS Great Lakes marine forecasts cover nearshore and offshore zones for all five lakes.
Navigation & Locks
The Great Lakes are well-charted, but their sheer size demands offshore-quality navigation equipment. Electronic charts, radar, and AIS are strongly recommended for open-water crossings. Commercial shipping traffic is heavy in connecting waterways, especially the St. Clair River, Detroit River, and Straits of Mackinac. The Soo Locks connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron and are free for pleasure craft (open ~March 25 to January 15). The Welland Canal requires advance reservations and a $200 CAD toll. Bridge clearances on the Chicago River and the Illinois Waterway are the critical constraint for Great Loop vessels, with 17–19 feet being the limiting factor.
Winter Storage & Maintenance
Winter storage is unavoidable on the Great Lakes. Most marinas offer haul-out, pressure wash, winterization, and storage packages. Options range from outdoor shrink-wrap ($1,000–$2,000) to heated indoor storage ($2,500–$6,000+). Budget roughly $50–$200 per foot of boat length for a complete winter package. The silver lining: freshwater boats suffer far less corrosion than saltwater boats and maintain significantly higher resale values. Zebra mussels are the primary freshwater-specific maintenance concern — inspect raw-water intakes and through-hulls regularly.
Popular Cruising Routes
Michigan’s Gold Coast (1–2 weeks): Holland → Saugatuck → South Haven → St. Joseph. Charming harbor towns with beaches, galleries, and restaurants along Lake Michigan’s east shore.

Lake Erie Islands (1 week): Sandusky → Kelleys Island → Put-in-Bay → Middle Bass Island → Port Clinton. Island-hopping, world-class walleye fishing, and the lively summer scene at Put-in-Bay.
Door County, WI (1 week): Sturgeon Bay → Egg Harbor → Fish Creek → Ephraim → Sister Bay. Wisconsin’s charming “Cape Cod of the Midwest” with cherry orchards, lighthouses, and state parks.
