New England Marina Guide
A comprehensive guide to marinas across Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut — covering amenities, nearby accommodations, supply stores, and cruising tips for recreational boaters.
Cruising New England by Boat
New England is one of the premier cruising destinations in North America. From Maine’s rugged, island-studded coastline to the historic ports of Newport and Nantucket, the region offers extraordinary variety within a compact geographic area. You can cruise from the Connecticut River to Penobscot Bay in less than a week, passing through some of the most iconic harbors in American maritime history.
This guide covers 30 marinas across 5 states, selected for their quality of facilities, transient-friendliness, and relevance to recreational cruisers. For each marina, we provide key details including slip counts, amenities, nearby hotels, and marine supply stores. The guide is organized by state, running northeast to southwest from Maine to Connecticut.
The cruising season runs from May through October, with peak conditions in July and August. Most marinas north of Cape Cod operate seasonally. Newport, Nantucket, Block Island, and Provincetown are the highest-demand destinations and require advance booking during summer weekends. Mid-week arrivals at less popular harbors often have same-day availability.
Booking tip: Most New England marinas accept reservations through the Dockwa platform. Create an account before your trip to streamline the booking process.

New England Cruising Tips
Weather & Tides
New England weather is famously variable. Fog is common in Maine from June through August, particularly east of Penobscot Bay. Afternoon southwesterlies build on most summer days, often reaching 15–20 knots by mid-afternoon. Thunderstorms can develop quickly on hot, humid days. Tidal range increases as you move northeast: 3–4 feet in Long Island Sound, 8–10 feet in Portland, and 10–12+ feet Downeast. Monitor NOAA Weather Radio continuously and check forecasts before each day’s passage.
Navigation
New England waters are well-charted and well-marked, but hazards abound: submerged rocks, ledges, and lobster pot buoys require constant vigilance, particularly in Maine. Carry up-to-date electronic charts and a backup (paper charts or a second chartplotter). The Cape Cod Canal has strong currents (up to 5 knots) and requires careful timing. Long Island Sound has extensive shoal areas along the Connecticut shore. Buzzards Bay is open to the southwest and can build steep seas in strong southerlies.
Provisioning
Major provisioning stops include Portland, Boston, Hyannis, Newport, and Mystic, all of which have grocery stores within walking distance or courtesy car range of the marina. Island destinations (Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island) have grocery stores but at significantly higher prices. Provision for the islands before crossing. Many marinas offer provisioning services or can arrange delivery from local markets.
Popular Cruising Routes
Nantucket Sound Loop (1–2 weeks): Hyannis → Nantucket → Martha’s Vineyard → Cuttyhunk → Newport → Block Island → return via the Sound. The classic New England cruising circuit.
Maine Penobscot Bay (1–2 weeks): Portland → Boothbay Harbor → Rockland → Camden → Castine → Stonington → Bar Harbor. World-class cruising with hundreds of islands, protected anchorages, and stunning scenery.
Long Island Sound (1 week): Stamford/Norwalk → Essex → New London → Mystic → Stonington → Watch Hill → Newport. Protected waters with diverse harbors and Connecticut River exploration.
