About Pacific Seacraft
Pacific Seacraft occupies a unique position in American sailboat building — a boutique manufacturer that chose quality over quantity and earned a reputation as one of the finest producers of bluewater cruising sailboats in the world. Founded in 1976 by Henry Mohrschladt and Mike Howarth in Fullerton, California, the company began by building the Dana 24, a compact but immensely capable offshore sailboat designed by the legendary W.I.B. Crealock.
The partnership with Crealock defined Pacific Seacraft's identity. William Inglis Barnet Crealock was a British-born naval architect who had sailed extensively in the Pacific and understood what a true ocean-crossing sailboat required. His designs for Pacific Seacraft — the Dana 24, Flicka 20, Crealock 34, Crealock 37, and the flagship 44 — shared common DNA: moderate displacement, long waterlines relative to overall length, cutaway forefoots for manoeuvrability, skeg-hung rudders for directional stability, and hull forms that tracked beautifully in heavy weather.
Pacific Seacraft boats were built with a level of structural integrity that bordered on obsessive. Hand-laid fibreglass hulls with no cored sections below the waterline. Massive layups at stress points. Bronze and stainless steel hardware. Teak joinery finished to furniture-grade standards. Every Pacific Seacraft that left the factory was built to cross oceans, whether or not the owner ever intended to do so.
The company relocated from California to Washington, North Carolina in 2000, seeking lower costs and proximity to the cruising grounds of the East Coast. Production continued at a modest pace — Pacific Seacraft never built more than a few dozen boats per year. This was by design: the hand-building process simply didn't scale, and the founders and subsequent owners resisted the temptation to cut corners for volume.
On the used market, Pacific Seacraft boats command a significant premium over comparable production sailboats. A well-maintained Crealock 34 or Pacific Seacraft 44 will sell for substantially more than a similar-vintage Hunter, Catalina, or Beneteau of equivalent size. The premium reflects genuine structural superiority, proven offshore capability, and a brand reputation earned through thousands of ocean miles logged by devoted owners. For the serious bluewater cruiser, a Pacific Seacraft represents one of the safest investments in sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pacific Seacraft
Where are Pacific Seacraft boats built?
Pacific Seacraft boats were originally built in Fullerton, California from 1976, and production moved to Washington, North Carolina in 2000. The company has always been a low-volume builder, producing only a few dozen boats per year using traditional hand-layup fibreglass construction and extensive hand-finished teak joinery.
What types of boats does Pacific Seacraft build?
Pacific Seacraft builds bluewater cruising sailboats ranging from the compact Flicka 20 to the flagship 44. Key models include the Dana 24, Crealock 34, Crealock 37, and Pacific Seacraft 44. All designs emphasise offshore capability, structural integrity, and traditional aesthetics with canoe sterns, bowsprits, and teak detailing.
How does Pacific Seacraft compare to other sailboat brands?
Pacific Seacraft occupies the premium tier of American sailboat building, comparable to Hinckley and Morris in build quality. Pacific Seacraft boats are significantly more heavily built than production sailboats from Hunter, Catalina, or Beneteau. On the used market, they command a substantial premium and hold their value exceptionally well due to their structural quality and proven offshore capability.
Are Pacific Seacraft boats good for ocean sailing?
Pacific Seacraft boats are among the most capable ocean-crossing production sailboats ever built. Designed by W.I.B. Crealock with heavy-displacement hulls, skeg-hung rudders, and structural layups far exceeding the norm, they have completed countless offshore passages including multiple circumnavigations. The brand is widely regarded as the benchmark for affordable bluewater capability.
Do Pacific Seacraft boats hold their value?
Pacific Seacraft boats hold their value exceptionally well — often better than any other American production sailboat brand. The combination of limited production numbers, superior construction quality, and strong demand from experienced offshore sailors creates a market where well-maintained Pacific Seacrafts sell quickly and for premium prices relative to comparable boats from larger manufacturers.
