About Motorcat

Motorcat is the name under which Bond Yachts, a composite boatbuilder in Piechowice in south-west Poland, built a range of small, trailerable power catamarans. Although Motorcats were sold and shown in Britain, they were Polish-built boats. The yard described itself as a Polish shipyard established in 2000 that had focused on the multihull market, and its early website set out a facility of 3,800 square metres of lamination and assembly halls, offices and social space, including a lamination shop, woodworking shop and main assembly shop, with a staff of 25 at the time. In those early years the Motorcat programme also listed a Polish office in Wrocław and a Canadian office, Encore International Multihulls of West Vancouver, British Columbia.

The first model was the Motorcat 30, or MC30. The builder's 2004 specification put it at 9.10 metres long with a beam of 2.93 metres and a draught of 0.35 to 0.48 metres, with standing headroom of 1.95 metres and berths for four to six. Power came from twin outboards — 2 x 50 hp as standard in the 2004 specification — and the builder quoted a dry weight with motors of 2 tonnes and a top speed of 22 to 25 knots. The idea was a pocket cruiser that could be towed to the cruising ground, with narrow hulls designed for economy and a smooth ride rather than outright power.

Construction was a sandwich (two skins with a core between them) with positive foam flotation, and Bond Yachts made unsinkability a central claim. On 3 July 2002 the yard flooded a production MC30 hull in a pool, with concrete blocks and bricks standing in for the weight of engines, fit-out and laminates. By the builder's account the boat stayed afloat, and remained stable with six people standing on it.

The MC30 was marketed internationally. In 2003 the builder listed dealers in the United States and Canada, and a UK dealer, LP Marine Developments of Hounslow, Middlesex. The builder's photo galleries show it exhibited at the London Boat Show in January 2004 and January 2005, at boot Düsseldorf in January 2004, at the Southampton Boat Show in September 2004 and September 2005, and in the United States at the Seattle Boat Show and the Annapolis powerboat show in 2005.

Further models followed. The MC29, on the builder's website by 2007, was an 8.88-metre catamaran styled with a single pointed bow and offered with either a single inboard or twin outboards. The Motorcat 30 X, reported by Multihulls World in February 2013 as recently launched, combined the proven MC30 hulls with a new cabin top and a third, central bow, which the builder said acted as a wave breaker and gave a convenient place to handle the anchor. The yard also listed electric versions of the MC29 and MC30 as projects, offered a small fishing boat, the BY13, and was developing a folding trimaran, the TNT 34.

The Motorcat website's last news item concerned the Wind & Water Boat Show in Gdynia in August 2012. By January 2019 the motorcat.com domain showed only a hosting provider's holding page, and Hulls.io has not been able to confirm Bond Yachts' current status. In practice a Motorcat today is a used-market purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorcat

Who built Motorcat catamarans?

Motorcats were built by Bond Yachts, a composite boatbuilder in Piechowice in south-west Poland. The yard described itself as a Polish shipyard established in 2000. Although the boats were sold and shown in the UK, they were Polish-built.

What is the Motorcat 30 (MC30)?

The MC30 was the first Motorcat model: a trailerable power catamaran that the builder's 2004 specification put at 9.10 metres long, 2.93 metres wide, with a draught of 0.35 to 0.48 metres and berths for four to six. That specification listed twin 50 hp outboards as standard, a dry weight with motors of 2 tonnes and a top speed of 22 to 25 knots.

Are Motorcat catamarans unsinkable?

Bond Yachts built the boats with sandwich construction and positive foam flotation and marketed them as unsinkable. On 3 July 2002 the yard flooded a production MC30 hull in a pool, with ballast standing in for the engines and fit-out, and reported that it stayed afloat and remained stable with six people standing on it. That was the builder's own trial, not an independent test.

Are Motorcats still being built?

Hulls.io has not been able to confirm that they are. The Motorcat website's last news item dates from August 2012, around the time the Motorcat 30 X was introduced, and by January 2019 the motorcat.com domain showed only a hosting provider's holding page. In practice a Motorcat is a used-market purchase.
