About Edgewater
EdgeWater Power Boats is an American builder of outboard-powered saltwater boats, based at 211 Dale Street in Edgewater, Florida, and owned since 2023 by the Swedish Nimbus Group. Its range is split into centre consoles and the dual-console boats it calls crossovers. When it bought the company, Nimbus said that all EdgeWater boats are fitted with outboard motors, although in 2012 the yard announced its first diesel model, the 228CCD, powered by a 180 hp Yanmar.
The company's story begins with Bob Dougherty. According to Soundings Trade Only's 2016 profile, written after his death, Dougherty was a former schoolteacher from Boston who started out drawing the lines of Boston Whaler's hulls in the 1960s. In a 30-year career there he rose to chief designer and senior vice president of engineering (EdgeWater's own history calls him director of engineering), and he designed nearly every Whaler built. He left Boston Whaler in 1990.
The founding date depends on which source you read. EdgeWater's website says the company was founded in 1992, Nimbus Group gives 1992, and Peter Truslow, EdgeWater's president, said in 2009 that the company had opened its doors in 1992. Trade Only's 2016 profile gives more detail: after leaving Whaler, Dougherty set up companies making windshields and other parts for boatbuilders, and built an unsinkable boat that he sold under the Marlin name. That business, the profile says, was sold to the North Technology Group in 1994 and became the EdgeWater brand in 1996. Trade Only's March 2016 obituary of Dougherty puts it more simply, saying he left Whaler in 1990 to start EdgeWater Boats. EdgeWater's own timeline agrees on the Marlin, an 18-foot centre console it dates to 1992, and dates the EdgeWater name to 1996. Dougherty went on to found Everglades Boats, which he sold in 2015, and he died at his home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, in March 2016, aged 85.
From 1994 EdgeWater belonged to the North sailmaking group. In 2009 Trade Only described it as owned by North Marine Group, alongside Southern Spars and North Sails businesses. In March 2014 Oakley Capital Private Equity bought a majority stake in North Technology Group, whose companies then included North Sails, Southern Spars and EdgeWater Boats; the previous majority shareholder was Terry Kohler's Windway Capital Corp. Windway Capital Corp. also reinvested equity in the business. We have not established who owned EdgeWater between 2014 and 2023, and Nimbus Group's announcements do not name the seller.
EdgeWater's best-known technical idea is Single Piece Infusion. Trade Only described it in 2009 as a closed-mould, vacuum-assisted process that infuses vinylester resin into the grid structure and the hull laminate in one step, adopted around 2005; EdgeWater says it has used it for all hulls from 22 feet up since 2008. The yard has also built for others. In 2009 it became the exclusive builder of the Summit 35 racer/cruiser sailboat for Summit Yachts, and Truslow told Trade Only that it had built a dozen 31- and 38-foot coastal patrol boats for Trinidad and Tobago and boats for the National Park Service and NOAA. EdgeWater's timeline dates its 20- and 24-foot dual-console "crossover" models to 2007.
The yard has grown since the recession. Truslow said in 2009 that its workforce had fallen from 100 to about 60. In 2016 Trade Only reported that EdgeWater had added 22,000 square feet of production space, taking it to 62,000, and increased its builders from 98 to 120.
Nimbus Group, which dates its founding to 1968 and credits it to the brothers Lars and Hans Wiklund, signed an agreement on 8 March 2023 to buy all of the shares in EdgeWater Power Boats, LLC for USD 9.5 million on a cash and debt-free basis, and took possession of them on 31 May 2023. According to Nimbus, EdgeWater had around 165 employees and sold more than 300 boats in 2022, in sizes up to 37 feet. Jennifer Butera was EdgeWater's president and CEO at the time of the deal. Nimbus later announced that it would build Nimbus models at the Edgewater plant, including the Nimbus T8, and in August 2025 it launched the EdgeWater 250CC to replace the 245CC.
EdgeWater's 2026 range runs from the small Outrider Series centre consoles through the CC centre consoles to the CX crossovers and the 310SC.
