About Prout
Founded in 1935 by Geoffrey Prout on Canvey Island, Essex, Prout Catamarans became the birthplace of the modern cruising catamaran. Geoffrey's sons Roland and Francis — British Champions in K2 Kayaks and Great Britain representatives at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics — lashed two racing kayaks together in 1947, added a mast, and reached 15 knots. Their Shearwater III became the world's first production catamaran (2,000+ built), and in 1964 a 42-foot Prout named Rehu Moana completed the world's first circumnavigation by a multihull. Over 3,000 Prout catamarans were built before the company entered receivership in 2001.
