The Sunseeker Predator 56: A Complete Guide
The Predator 56 is a two-cabin open performance motor yacht that Sunseeker built in Poole, Dorset, in the early 2000s. HMY Yachts’ Powerboat Guide gives its production years as 2000 to 2004, and Sunseeker’s own website, as archived, carried a Predator 56 page from at least February 2000 to September 2004. The company’s media briefing notes list it in the Performance Motoryachts line-up of the 2001/2002, 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 ranges.
Sunseeker’s own description promised power and speed, a wide cruising range, ease of handling, excellent outdoor facilities and comfortable accommodation, with the option of an opening hardtop. HMY’s guide goes further: in its view the Predator 56 set the standard for big sport yachts in its production years, and it is one of the few European sportboats whose engine room offers decent service access.
The name needs care when searching listings, because Sunseeker has used several Predator numbers in the mid-50s and around 60 feet. The 2003/2004 range listed a Predator 55 alongside the 56: a different boat which Sunseeker’s provisional specification lists with twin Arneson surface drives, with a shorter 17.32 m hull. A later, unrelated Predator 55 was launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2024, and Motor Boat & Yachting tested a Predator 57 in its April 2015 issue. In late 2001 Sunseeker’s website also listed a Predator 60 alongside the 56, at 19.13 m (62 ft 9 in) overall. Check the build year and the specification before comparing adverts.

Design and Accommodation
Construction
Sunseeker’s specification describes a hand-laid GRP hull with a stitched multi-axial reinforced single-skin bottom, balsa-cored topsides and deck, and longitudinal stringers supported by transverse bulkheads and floors.
Cockpit and bathing platform
The cockpit seats up to eight around a table and has a wet bar with a sink, coolbox, ice maker and ceramic griddle. The helm has a double stand-or-sit seat for the helmsman and co-pilot. Aft, a hydraulic lift-and-fall bathing platform launches and recovers a dinghy or personal watercraft, and a hydraulic gangway was standard in the 2001–2003 European specifications (the US specification lists a remote-controlled telescopic passerelle). European boats came with a full camper/sun top and a tonneau cover; the opening hardtop was an option.
Saloon, galley and cabins
Below, the saloon has a large dining area with a folding table, and the galley a two-ring ceramic hob, refrigerator, freezer and microwave/grill. HMY’s guide describes a full-length leather settee and plenty of high-gloss cherry joinery. There are two cabins: a VIP stateroom forward with a double berth, and a master stateroom aft with a large double berth and a settee, which HMY describes as full-width. Sunseeker’s specification gives each cabin an en-suite shower room with a separate shower compartment. HMY notes, however, that the aft cabin’s heads also has an entrance from the saloon, so it is not private.
Engines and Performance
Every Sunseeker specification for the Predator 56 that we found, European and US, lists a single engine option: twin MAN D2848 LE403 V8 diesels rated at 800 PS (588 kW, 790 hp) each. They drive four-blade bronze propellers through shafts running in half tunnels. Sunseeker estimated a maximum speed of up to 34 knots, cruising speeds of 22 to 27 knots and a range of up to 260 miles, and it pointed out that hull condition, engine tuning, propellers, temperature and load all affect these figures. Fuel capacity is 2,350 litres.
How It Compares
Predator 60. The bigger Predator listed on Sunseeker’s website alongside the 56 in late 2001. Sunseeker’s specification gives it an overall length of 19.13 m (62 ft 9 in), the same 4.59 m beam, a half-load displacement of 24,150 kg, shafts in tunnels like the 56, and a choice of engines: the 56’s twin MAN D2848 LE403 V8s or larger MAN V10 and V12 options, with an estimated maximum speed of up to 36 knots.
Predator 55 (2003/2004 range). The smaller Predator that joined the range while the 56 was still listed. Sunseeker’s provisional specification from early 2004 gives it a 17.32 m (56 ft 10 in) hull, a 4.57 m beam and a half-load displacement of 21,300 kg. Its principal characteristics list twin Arneson surface drives rather than the 56’s shafts, with a choice of MAN V8 or V10 engines.
Buying a Used Sunseeker Predator 56
The youngest Predator 56s date from 2004, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the original specification. A few points are still worth checking against the boat in front of you.
What to check
- Which engines are fitted. The builder’s specification lists twin MAN D2848 LE403s; if a boat has anything else, ask for the history.
- Engine hours and the service history of both engines, shafts and propellers.
- Whether the optional opening hardtop is fitted, and that it works.
- The hydraulic lift-and-fall bathing platform and the gangway or passerelle, and that both work.
- The canvas: the camper/sun top and tonneau cover on European boats.
- The age and condition of the electronics, which on a boat of this age may have been replaced.
- A full out-of-water survey, with an engine survey, by a surveyor who knows boats of this era.
